    The first ‘Bike Week’ in Daytona Beach was held in 1937 and it has happened every year since. Maybe it is the hard white sand beaches or maybe is just the mild winter days that keeps leather clad bikers (and biker babes) returning to Daytona Beach year after year after year. Whatever the reason, they come and they come in greater numbers every year.

    Daytona Beach says of itself that is The World’s Most Beautiful Beach and that it is, The Birthplace of Speed. The two claims are intertwined. There were no wide paved roads in existence and the sand on Daytona Beach was there, it was available and, maybe most important, it was free.

Daytona is a beautiful city so of course it attracts the rich and the famous.

    Florida Space Coast Less than Two Hours from Daytona Beach . Florida’s Space Coast as it is known and Cape Canaveral are only about 74 miles from Daytona Beach. This is just a short and very pleasant drive and what awaits you is well worth the trip.

  • Ponce Inlet Lighthouse in Daytona Beach
    You just must not miss seeing the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse while you are on vacation in Daytona Beach. Ponce Inlet Lighthouse was first named Mosquito Inlet Lighthouse when it was constructed. The lighthouse was designed by Francis Hopkinson Smith. When the inspectors first saw the lighthouse they declared it to be "the most beautiful and best proportioned tower in the district." It remains so today.

    The Ten Thousand Islands have attracted humans since before written history was kept. Prehistoric humans inhabited the area. They constructed large shell midden complexes on several islands. Then Spanish explorers traded with the native population and exposed them to diseases for which they had no natural immunity and the native dwellers were wiped out by disease.

    Building a light house on Sanibel Island was first suggested in 1856 but no action was taken by the Lighthouse Board. After the Civil War, a lighthouse was again requested and the decision was discussed. Even way back then it the Congress of the United States a long time to take action. Finally, in 1883, $50,000 (fifty-thousand dollars) was finally granted and construction of the lighthouse was begun in 1884 on Sanibel Island.
